Identifying Jeep Rear Axles – Application List from 1941

Which axle is in my Jeep?

Series and model year decide: CJ and SJ from 1976 to 1986 run the AMC 20 rear axle, Cherokee XJ through Grand Cherokee WK from 1989 to 2010 the Chrysler 8.25, Wrangler YJ and TJ mostly the Dana 35 or Dana 44. Up front, the Dana 30 was fitted almost continuously from 1972 to 2006, with the Dana 44 in the TJ Rubicon and LJ. The full application list from 1941 with ring gear diameter and axle spline count is in the chart below.

How do I identify my axle?

The fastest way is ring gear diameter and axle spline count – both values identify each axle type and are listed for every axle in the chart. The identification graphic below helps with a first match by model and year.
