Building a Jeep for off road use: from suspension to road approval
Anyone building a Jeep for off road use starts with the suspension, and then runs into the parts nobody thinks about beforehand: brake hoses that become too short, a pitman arm that pulls the steering off centre, a driveshaft sitting at too steep an angle. Renegade Station stocks 287 suspension and lift articles across 17 model series, from the CJ to the Gladiator. Our own workshop in Gersfeld fits them and handles the German TÜV approval afterwards.
In what order do you build a Jeep for off road use?
The first decision is the tyre size, the first purchase is usually the suspension. That sounds contradictory but it is not: ground clearance at the point where a Jeep grounds out first, underneath the axle, comes only from larger tyres. One inch more tyre diameter gives half an inch more room under the differential. A lift raises the frame and body, improves the approach and departure angles, and above all creates the space for those larger tyres to turn freely.
So decide on the tyre size first, build the suspension so that size fits, and mount the wheels last. Protection and lights come after that. Do it the other way round, lift first and then discover the planned wheels still rub, and you pay twice.
How much lift is possible without follow-up work?
Up to roughly 2 inches, about 5 centimetres, most model series manage with springs, shock absorbers and a steering stabilizer. You can read that off our own range: the slip yoke eliminator is rated for 2 to 6 inches, the adjustable track bar on the Wrangler JK from 3 inches, the pitman arm from 4 inches. Below those marks none of these parts calls for replacement.
Above them the angles change far enough that steering, brake lines and driveshaft have to follow. Which part becomes due when is in the next table.
What a lift kit usually leaves out
A spring kit on its own is not enough. The common kits contain springs and often the matching shock absorbers, but rarely the parts that the changed geometry makes necessary. On our articles this is stated directly, because they are made for exactly this purpose.
| Part | When it is needed | Available for |
|---|---|---|
| Longer shock absorbers | with every lift | Wrangler YJ (Bilstein B8 5100, 75–100 mm), Grand Cherokee WJ (50 mm) |
| Extended brake hoses | rated up to 4" | Wrangler YJ, TJ, JK, Cherokee XJ, Grand Cherokee ZJ |
| Pitman arm | from 4" | CJ, Wrangler YJ, TJ, JK, Cherokee XJ (4"–8") |
| Slip yoke eliminator | 2"–6", NP231 transfer case | Wrangler YJ, TJ, JK |
| Heavy duty driveshaft | Wrangler JK 2"–4", JL and Gladiator 0"–6" | Wrangler JK, JL, Gladiator JT (Spicer) |
| Adjustable track bar | Wrangler JK from 3", JL up to 4.5" | Wrangler JK, JL |
| Reinforced steering box bracket | under heavy off road load | CJ 1976–1986 |
If you want the height without touching the suspension, a body lift is the alternative: the body is raised off the frame by 1", 2" or 3". That creates tyre clearance without changing the springs. We stock body lift kits for the CJ, Wrangler YJ, TJ and JK.
Jeep off road parts by model series
The suspension and lift categories are separated by model series, so you only see what fits your vehicle. The figures are as of 31 August 2026.
If your model series is not listed here, give us a call. For some models we hold suspension parts in stock that do not yet have a category of their own.
Jeep Wrangler off road tuning: how YJ, TJ, JK and JL differ
The four Wrangler generations need different parts, even where the finished height looks the same. The YJ runs on leaf springs, the TJ and JK on coil springs, and the JL again has different mounting dimensions.
Wrangler YJ 1987–1995. A leaf sprung vehicle, so spring shackles and longer leaf springs are the usual route. For articulation there are Bilstein shock absorber sets in 75 to 100 mm extra length. From 2" with the NP231 transfer case the slip yoke eliminator becomes a subject.
Wrangler TJ 1996–2006. With 53 items our largest suspension category. Coil springs allow finer steps, along with matching steering stabilizers and the pitman arm from 4".
Wrangler JK 2007–2018. Here the track bar matters: from 3" an adjustable bar belongs on the vehicle, otherwise the axle no longer sits centred. We stock Spicer driveshafts for 0"–2" and 2"–4".
Wrangler JL from 2018. Driveshafts for 0"–6" and an adjustable track bar up to 4.5". Alongside these, steel bumpers from Rugged Ridge, among them the Spartacus and a high clearance version.
More on the model series and their differences is on the page Jeep Wrangler parts and accessories.
Which off road accessories for a Jeep are actually worth it?
That depends on where you drive. For forest tracks and snow, suspension and the right tyres are enough. Anyone crossing water needs a snorkel, anyone travelling alone needs a winch.
- Snorkels. For the Wrangler JK we stock the XHD Modular system from Rugged Ridge, for the 3.8 and 3.6 petrol engines as well as the 2.8 CRD, as a high or low mount version.
- Winches. From 2,500 lbs for light recovery up to 10,500 lbs with a corded remote.
- Bumpers with winch mounting. If you are planning a winch, you need the matching bumper with it. For the JK the XHD modular bumper, for the JL and Gladiator the heavy duty steel versions, short as a stubby or as a high clearance bumper.
- Skid plates. Protection for the rear control arms on the JK, a differential guard for the Dana 44 axle and a plate for the rear muffler.
- Wheel spacers. Aluminium sets of 60 mm with German TÜV certification, for the CJ, Wrangler YJ and TJ as well as the Cherokee XJ, KJ and KK series.
- Roof racks and roof tent. Racks for the Wrangler JK and JL, plus a three person roof tent from Rugged Ridge with a matching annex.
- Auxiliary lights. Round and cube shaped LED lights with clamp brackets for roll bars and racks.
The full range is under Jeep accessories, sorted by model and section.
How does an overlanding build differ from a trail build?
A trail build is about short, hard sections: articulation, ground clearance and protection against rock contact. Overlanding is about the vehicle running loaded for days on end without anything breaking or running out.
In practice that means a lift, wheel spacers, skid plates and a winch come first for the trail. For overlanding it is roof racks and a roof tent, a suspension rated for the higher permanent weight, and auxiliary lights for arriving after dark. The two do not exclude each other, but the order of purchases differs, and a suspension tuned perfectly when empty turns soft once a roof tent and payload are on board.
What has to be registered for road approval?
In Germany suspension parts and wheel spacers have to be entered in the vehicle documents. Our wheel spacers therefore come with TÜV certification. For a lift, our workshop in Gersfeld handles both the installation and the subsequent inspection, so you only need one appointment.
What is checked and which other work we carry out is described on the page Workshop Service. Besides lifts, that includes axle rebuilds, manual and transfer cases, and engines.
Frequently asked questions about off road builds
Do I start with tyres or with the suspension?
With the decision on tyre size, because only larger tyres raise the lowest point under the axle. What gets bought and fitted first is usually the suspension, because it has to create the space for those tyres. Mount the tyres last and the two match up.
How much lift can a Jeep take without further parts?
There is no blanket answer, because it depends on the model series and the spring type. Our brake hoses are rated up to 4 inches, the pitman arm is needed from 4 inches, the slip yoke eliminator in the 2 to 6 inch range. Give us a call if you are unsure which combination suits your model year.
Do I need new brake hoses after fitting a lift?
If the axle droops further than before, yes. The standard hoses are sized for the standard travel and can come under tension at full articulation. We stock extended hoses for the Wrangler YJ, TJ and JK as well as for the Cherokee XJ and Grand Cherokee ZJ.
Can you fit the parts for me?
Yes. The workshop in Gersfeld installs lifts and puts them through the TÜV inspection afterwards. Appointments on +49 6654 917240, Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and from 1 to 5 p.m.
How long does delivery take?
Stock items leave Gersfeld within 1–2 working days inside Germany and reach other countries in 3–7 days. The details are under Shipping and returns.
Do the accessories fit older models as well?
For the CJ and the vintage series we stock suspension parts just as we do for the newer models, though with different emphases. Which axle is in your vehicle is answered by the axle identification list; the right model series can be found through the Jeep model finder.
